The map below shows the areas that we explored on this day.

Crabs, Caves, and Local Music
We woke up to another beautiful morning, feeling relaxed and content in the stillness of the southern coast. After a laid-back breakfast, we headed to a nearby beach, where the sand was dotted with tiny crab-made mounds—each one the entrance to a hidden burrow. We swam in the crystal-clear water and spent a few peaceful hours lounging by the shore, taking in the calm.
In the afternoon, we set off again, passing through a quiet fishing village on our way toward the mountains. There, we explored a large grotto—a cool, shady refuge traditionally used by local shepherds as shelter from the intense sun and a place to keep their sheep.
Later, we crossed back over the mountains and returned to Salim Al Khabani, a village we had visited earlier. When we arrived, we found Salem digging into the bedrock for a new shed. After sitting in the car for hours, I was ready to move, and helping him with tools was the perfect way to stretch my legs. Meanwhile, Jenny and Jerodé took the chance to freshen up with a proper shower.
As the sun set, we all got ready for the evening and gathered once again with our hosts. We shared food, laughter, and music, and even picked up a few words of the Soqotri language. The songs and the sound of a handmade flute carried through the night—it was a warm, unforgettable end to a day of discovery and connection.
